Snapchat is a popular mobile application that allows you to send videos and photos, both of which will be self-destructed after a few moments.
Snapchat is also a fun messaging application. You can take a photo or video with it, then add a caption, sticker or graphic on it, and send it to a friend. Alternatively, you can add it to your “history”, a collection of your photos and videos, that lasts 24 hours, and that you can broadcast for the whole world to see or just for your friends.
These things are part of the different functions of Snapchat. At its base, Snapchat is used to send photos and videos, called snaps, to friends. Your friends can see your snaps for 10 seconds, and then they disappear.
More recently Snapchat has added a “one-to-one” feature in chat. Users can chat via private messages. Once both parties leave the chat, the messages will disappear. Users can choose to save the chat, in which case the messages will be saved so that both users can see them again.
Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brow when they were students at Stanford University. The company is headquartered in Venice, California.
The prototype for Snapchat was started by Brown and Spiegel as a Spiegel class project at Stanford, where Spiegel was in the design of a major product. Beginning with the name “Picaboo”, the idea was that users could communicate using images that were explicitly short-lived. When, in April 2011, Spiegel launched the product idea in front of his class as a final project, his classmates opposed the idea of temporary photos. Murphy was finally introduced in the project to write the source code for the application, and “Picaboo” was finally officially launched on iOS only in July 2011.
Snapchat then evolved into a mix of private messaging and public content, including brand networks, publications and live events such as sports and music. 71% of users surveyed said they preferred the application for its chat, messaging, and imaging services; compared with 5% who chose almost exclusively the various events, brand characteristics, and content published by celebrities on a daily basis.
